3.1 Area and Volume Ratios
We can also express the relationship between areas by using scales.

By scales we normally mean distance scales.  Look in the figure below and try to see how the length scale and the area scale relate to each other.

Length Scale: 1:1

Length Scale: 2:1

Length Scale: 3:1

Area Scale:
12:1= 1:1

Area Scale:
22:1= 4:1

Area Scale:
32:1 = 9:1

We can then draw the conclusion that:

Read: The area scale is equal to the length scale squared.
Written: Area Scale = Length Scale · Length Scale = (Length Scale)²

Volume Scale

In the same way that there is an area scale, there is also a volume scale.

Length Scale: 1:1

Length Scale: 2:1

Length Scale: 3:1

Volume Scale:
13:1= 1:1

Volume Scale:
23:1= 8:1

Volume Scale:
33:1= 27:1

Conclusion:

Read: The volume scale is equal to the length scale cubed.
Written: Volume Scale = Length Scale · Length Scale · Length Scale = (Length Scale)³
