2.2 Reading and Writing Time

In Sweden, we normally write the date in two ways either:

  • 2006-11-14 (sometimes even 06 11 14)
Read as: two thousand six, eleven, fourteen.
  • 14/11 2006
Read: the fourteenth of the eleventh, two thousand six or November fourteenths, two thousand six.

24-hour time
The time of day is shown in 24 hour time intervals.
A new day begins 00:00 and ends 24:00.

00:00 and 24:00 is then the same time.

12-hour time
In English speaking and some Spanish speaking countries, they use 12 hour time.  The time is indicated in 12 hour intervals.

From midnight to 12 o’clock in the middle of the day (00:00 – 12:00), you write am (lat. ante meridium) after the hour. During the evening and night (12:00 – 24:00), you write pm (lat. poste meridium) after the hour.

You never write 0. Instead, you use 12 when the time is between 12:00 and 13:00
