2.1 From Fractions to Decimals and Percent
Here you see a rectangle.  We say that the rectangle corresponds to a whole.

One whole = 1.

If you divide the rectangle into a hundred equally large parts, then every part is a hundredth.

1/100 = 0.01 = 1 %

The whole rectangle is 100/100 = 1 = 100 %

Here you see a rectangle divided into two equal parts.

1/2 = 0.50

If you divide the same rectangle into a hundred equal parts then half would look like this:

50/100 = 0.50

1/2 = 50/100 = 0.50 = 50 %

Instead of saying half, you can say 50 hundredths, or 50 percent of the rectangle.  The word percent means of hundred or per hundred, which more simply can be expressed as hundredths.
