2.1 Mathematical Words
If you work with story problems, you can’t always see which of the four operators you should use because all of the information is in word form.  You need to then figure out which of the operators you need to use by reading the text carefully.  It is really important because of this to know and understand those words that refer to these operators and which calculations you need to do.

Common words for addition and subtraction


To Use

Tim has 10kg rice at home and uses 2 kg for cooking.  How much does he have left?

Answer: 10 – 2 = 8 kg


Deduct

Mary bought a computer for 17,500 kr. She may deduct 1,000 from the price. How much should she pay?

Answer: 17,500 – 1,000 = 16,500 kr


Take off

Leo bought rice for 700 kr. Because he bought so much he could take off 70 kr. How much should he pay?

Answer: 700 – 70 = 630 kr


Missing

A trip to the movies costs 85 kr. Ahmed has only 40 kr.  How much is missing for him to go to the movies?

Answer: 85 – 40 = 45 kr


More

Carlos has 4 tv channels. When he puts up his satellite dish he gets 67 more TV-channels. How many channels does he have now?

Answer: 4 + 67 = 71 TV-channels


Fewer

A family has 87 TV-channels when they had a satellite dish. When they took down the dish, they had 70 fewer channels. How many channels do they have now?

Answer: 87 -70 = 17 TV-channels


Consume

A car consumes 1 liter of gasoline per ten kilometers. Between Stockholm and Uppsala there are 70 kilometers. How many liters are consumed?

Answer: 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 +1 = 7 liters


To take

Juan presses a glass of orange juice. It takes 3 oranges for one glass. How many does he have left if he had 7 oranges? 

Answer: 7 – 3 = 4 oranges

Shorter

Shaquille O´Neals foot is 41 cm. A normal foot is 10 cm shorter. How long is a normal foot?

Answer: 41 – 10 = 31 cm

Left

Mary has a cash card worth 500 kr for her mobile. She calls for 200 kr. How much does she have left to call for?

Answer: 500 – 200 = 300 kr


Taller

Fredrik is 180 cm tall. The world’s tallest man is Robert J Waldow. He is 102 cm taller. How tall is he?

Answer: 180 + 102 = 282 cm


Lighter

Maria weighs 68 kg. Sofia is 3 kg lighter than Maria. How much does Sofia weigh?

Answer: 68 – 3 = 65 kg


Decrease

Sergey drives at 100 km/h. At a police check point he decreases his speed to 30 km/h. What is his new speed?

Answer: 100 - 30 = 70 km/h


Missing

In a class there are 30 students. Today there are 23 students at school. How many are missing?

Answer: 30 - 23 = 7 students


Total Arsenal took 32 points during the fall and 44 points during the spring. How many points did they take in total?

Answer: 32 + 44 = 76 points

Difference When it is 7 o’clock in Stockholm it is 6 o’clock in London.  How big is the difference in time between Stockholm and London?

Answer: 7 -6 =1 hour

To Lower

During the summer, businesses usually lower their prices. A sweater for 450 kr cost this past summer 350 kr. How much was the price lowered?

Answer: 450 – 350 = 100 kr


Take away

Marie earns 20,000 kr. From this she takes away 6,000 kr which she pays in taxes. How much does she have left?

Answer: 20,000 – 6,000 = 14,000 kr


More

Mary and Isabelle are going to have a party.  Mary has invited 25 people. Isabelle invites 10 more people. How many are invited to the party?

Answer: 25 + 10 = 35 people


Together

Ibrahim has 3 siblings and Ahmed has 2 siblings.How many siblings do they have together?

Answer: 3 + 2 = 5 siblings


Total

Ronaldinho made 8 goals during the fall and 15 goals during the spring league.How many goals did he make in total during the season?

Answer: 8 + 15 = 23 goals


Heavier

Tom weighs 87 kg. Jim is 7 kg heavier than Tom. How much does Jim weigh?

Answer: 87 + 7 = 94 kg

Additional

Fredrik is out jogging. He first runs 5 km, and then decides to run an additional 3 miles. How far has he run?

Answer: 5 + 3 = 8 km


Remaining

Ryan is going to take the subway to Kista. From the Central Station it is eight stops. When he gets to Hallonbergen, there is one stop remaining. How many stops has he passed?

Answer: 8 – 1 = 7 stops


Rises

In the morning, the temperature is 6ºC. During the day, the temperature rises by 4 ºC. What is the new temperature?

Answer: 6 + 4 = 10ºC

Left

Solomon buys ice cream for 13 kr. How much does he have left if he had 20 kr?

Answer: 20 – 13 = 7 kr
