2.1 The Concept of Volume
 Volume means how much something contains or holds. These three bottles have the same contents but different sizes.  They are ordered by size with the smallest bottle to the left.  The largest bottle has the most volume and is to the right. Foto: Fredrik Enander

 How many cubes of sugar do you think that there are in the box? Do you need to count them all or is there another quicker way to figure this out? On the top later there are five rows with 7 cubes in every row.  That becomes 5 · 7 = 35 lumps. Foto: Lennart Rönnberg

How many layers of sugar cubes do you think there are in the carton?  If we put a few sugar cubes outside the carton, we see that we can stack four on top of each other.

Then we can calculate the total number of sugar cubes.

 The number of sugar cubes is equal to the number of sugar cubes per layer multiplied by the number of layers. The number of sugar cubes = = 35 ∙ 4 = 140 We can say that the box has a volume which is equivalent to 140 sugar cubes.  So if every sugar cube is a volume unit, then we can say the box has a volume of 140 volume units.
