2.2 Negative Numbers on the Number Line
The negative numbers can, just like the positive ones, be represented on the number line.  The number lines that you have seen before often start at zero and then follow the positive numbers in order of size to the right on the number line.

Where on the number line are the negative numbers then?

If we draw the number line horizontally, the positive numbers are written in order to show why negative numbers on the number line. Mathematicians have decided that they should be written in order but to the left.  Because of this, this is how a horizontal number line looks with both negative and positive numbers:

All of these numbers together are called whole numbers, but we divide these up into negative and positive numbers.
