7.4 Decimals in the Numerator
Normally you can solve problems with decimals in the numerator by expansion (see 7.2) and simplification of fractions.
If we start with the number 0.4 ÷ 4.
Extend it by multiplying by 10.
0.4 ÷ 4
=

=
4 ÷ 40
And the simply by dividing by 4.
4 ÷ 40
=

=
1 ÷ 10
=
0.1
You can also imagine that if you have a 0.4 (4 dm) long string and cut it into 4 equal large pieces – how long with each piece be? The answer is 1 dm (0.1 m).
