2.1 From Fractions to Decimals and Percent
Here you see a rectangle. We say that the rectangle corresponds to a whole.
One whole = 1.
If you divide the rectangle into a hundred equally large parts, then every part is a hundredth.
1/100 =
0.01 = 1 %
The whole rectangle is 100/100 = 1 = 100
%
Here you see a rectangle divided into two equal parts.
1/2 = 0.50
If you divide the same rectangle into a hundred equal parts then half would look like this:
50/100 = 0.50
1/2 = 50/100 = 0.50 = 50 %
Instead of saying half, you can say 50 hundredths, or 50 percent of the rectangle. The word percent means of *hundred* or *per hundred*, which more simply can be expressed as *hundredths*. |
