Why do we use percent?

You have certainly seen the word percent or the symbol for percent % in different situations. What do you know about percent?

What do you think of when you hear the word percent?
Some students who received this question answered like this:

”50 percent is the same as half.”

“When the shop has a sale, they usually write on the signs how many percent they have lowered prices with.”

“On milk cartons you can read how many percent fat the milk contains because different types of milks have different amounts of fat.”

“If I give you 100 percent then I give it all.”

“Sometimes things are more expensive.  Then you can also talk about how price increases are by using percent.”
